A previous poster shared their grievances about 'inappropriate content' in events she or gw judged. While I don't know the specific incidents that prompted them to post, I have concerns about generalizing all "profanity, drug references, and excessive sexual references" as not appropriate. While I've judged events where profanity and other content didn't seem to really fit or be needed for the performance, most of time the literature the student chose to perform was lacked quality, profanity or not; however, I've also judged poetry and prose rounds where, given the context of the literature, such profanity or sexual/drug references, were really needed and that by taking them out, you destroyed author's intent. The literature was well written and words and content were chosen purposefully by the author instead of carelessly. As a coach, I've helped students cut literature with content that some judges might consider inappropriate, so out of fear of retribution from judges, we cut these out even though by doing so, I know we're taking away from the author's intent. My point is this: don't paint a broad stroke on profanity and sex and drug references; instead, look at why the 'questionable content' was included in the performance and whether taking out such content would've lessened the impact of it.
On a further note, I believe that www.nscta.info is a great venue to have these types of discussions. I know I could bring up a myriad of topics to discuss(including unwritten norms our activity has developed and whether they're an asset or detriment to our activity), but I'll save them for another time :).
Keep posting!
