textbooks

A Contributor writes "We're replacing our speech textbooks next year, and I need to order samples. Right now we're using The Basics of Speech by Galvin et. al. w/ 1994 c date. Our speech class is one semester, required for graduation aimed at sophomore level. Therefore, our text has to be accessible to everybody from the top genius to the SPED kids. The focus is on public speaking because interpersonal is covered in other parts of our curriculum. I make performance, not textbook assignments, the focus of the class, but we do need some kind of text for basic terms. Any suggestions? Post here, or preferably e-mail choward@esu15.org"

Love Languages - Bonus Notes & Handouts

From Brenda Broeker regarding questions on her love languages session at NSCTA convention.
Books: When I had previously gone to Barnes and Noble, they had told me they had a Love Languages for teachers book they could get in for me...I have been out online and think they meant the Love Languages for Teens...if you go to Amazon or Barnes & Noble online -- search for Gary Chapman or Five Love Languages and it will pull up about five different book titles and you can choose away :)
Handouts: The handouts I have attached include: a worksheet I use with the kids and two different quizzes (one for married couples and one for kids). When I give the handout to the kids, I remind them to revise a few statements for teens as opposed to younger kids and then answer accordingly (I like it when my parents hold my hand in public is turned to place a hand on my shoulder.) I also cut off the heading on the quiz page prior to photocopying (you will see why :) There is a religious reference)
Finally:) there are also some online quizzes out there that kids can take if you want to give them a hands on computer experience. It will score their language and offer a report.

Collaborative Intercultural Communication Project

A Contributor writes "I'm looking to a 21st Century Learning Project Dealing With Intercultural Communication; however, I'm having difficulty trying to find a collaborative class(preferably international).
Here's a brief description:
Project Idea: You work at a public relations/communication consulting firm and have been hired by a company that is moving many of their offices over to a foreign country ; they want to acclamate their workers to functioning well in the new country. Demonstrate how to:
1. How to Make introductions
2. Work Etiquette Policies/Accept Criticisms
3. Giving Others Criticism
4. How to Give Presentations;
5. Eating at a Business Events;
6. Making Requests
Creating a iMovie, iWeb, or Podcast;
In turn, a firm from a foreign country will make an introductory video about American customs;
You will exchange your presentations to the other company for evaluation and feedback throughout the presentation. If you need feedback as the project goes, reference your peers in the other country, podcasts, and professional sites; Do not base your impressions on popular culture references.

Question for Members

Dear NSCTA Members,
I need your help. We are surveying schools to find out what their policy is when a student is failing a class. For example, at Lakeview, if a student is failing a class, he/she has to report to "Friday time" where he/she is to study for 35 minutes and all the other students get out earlier. If the student is failing two classes, he/she is not allowed to compete in extra-curricular activites. Please let me know if you have any policies in place concerning this matter.
