2010 NSCTA Convention
From Pen to Paper to Performance!
Our 2010 NSCTA convention theme truly encompasses what we do as an organization. These year's presenters, panels, and workshops will help you hone your skills in both the classroom and the extracurricular arenas. We recently sent out our annual newsletter with key information about NSCTA endeavors and convention. You can download it here.
Registration for convention is now open and, as in past years, you register online or via the practice of the 1900's: paper and US mail. The process is slightly different. Please read the directions that follow.
- First, all registrants should download the registration form. (The link is at the end of the directions.) If you click on the link, it may open in your browser window and you'll need to save it to your computer.
- Second, open the file in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. Mac users will want make sure you avoid opening the file in Preview.
- Third, fill in all appropriate information. There are a couple of new questions this year. If you select the proper options the form should calculate your total due to the NSCTA.
- Fourth, double check the form.
- Last: submit the form. If you would like to email the form (and simplify the process), it should automatically open your email program and attach the file when you select that option. If you would like to mail the form, you will need to print the form, find an envelope, address the envelope, affix a stamp, lick the stamp, and find a mail drop box. See how much simpler life is if you register online.

Tentative Convention Schedule

Convention Vice-President Lori Long has put together a great program for our convention this year. We have some popular workshops and sessions that will be returning this year and some exciting new opportunities.
Our keynote speaker is Daniel Cronn-Mills, Distinguished Faculty scholar at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He will lead some sessions cover his research areas including competitive speech and debate, and first amendment issues.

Nebraska fares well at first-ever NIETOC!

The inaugural National Individual Events Tournament of Champions was held May 14-16 in Fullerton, CA. More than 200 students from 54 schools in 16 states participated. Representing Nebraska were Elkhorn, Kearney, Lincoln Southeast, Lincoln Southwest, Millard North and Millard West.

2011 Oratorical Scholarship

Members of the NSCTA
The American Legion conducts an Annual Oratorical Scholarship Program “A Constitutional Speech”. Although this years contest has been conducted, we are now preparing for the next.
This fall we will be contacting the High School Counselor for each High school in Nebraskal, but we are seeking out other methods and avenues in order to reach the youth of Nebraska prior to the start of School. It is our sincere hope that you would consider using the channels within your organization to provide the below information. I would appreciate your assistance to ensure that every opportunity is given, to as wide a range of youth, to get any financial assistance towards furthering their education.
Brief description of the Scholarship Program:
The contestants compete with in the State at District, Area and State levels, then onto Nationals. The District Winner that competes in the Area contest receives $100, there are 4 Areas and that winner then competes at State with $200 for 4th, $400 for 3rd, $600 for 2nd and $1000 for 1st. That money is paid directly to the contestant. The State winner goes on to compete at a National competition in Indianapolis, the trip is paid for. At the 3 day competition, the Nebraska winner competes against the other 54 Legion Departments. Scholarship awards are presented to the three finalists in the final round of the national contest as follows: 1st place — $18,000; 2nd place — $16,000; 3rd place — $14,000. Each department (state) winner who is certified into and participates in the first round of the national contest will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Each first round winner who advances to and participates in the second round, but does not advance to the final round, will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship to pursue education beyond high school.
Contest rules call for local contests to be held in October. Each high school winner is eligible to compete in a district contest, which will be held sometime in November. The 15 district winners will compete in one of four area contests scheduled for December 1 through December 15. Winners of the four contests will compete in the state contest in January.
Although the paper copy of the brochures and other information on dates and times will not be available until July, the National web site http://www.legion.org/oratorical is up to date for the categories of the constitution, which the contestants will speak on, for 2011. Membership Update

As you are winding down your school year, please mark your calendars and plan to attend the Nebraska Speech Communication and Theater Association Convention 2010! The theme for the convention will be From Pen to Paper to Performance. Writing will be a major part of the focus for convention! It should be a fantastic event!
The convention will take place in North Platte at the Sandhills Convention Center at the Quality Inn and Suites. The convention will take place October 1 & 2. We are currently attempting to have an NSAA Rules Meeting for speech and play production to take place on the evening of September 30.
Reservations are being accepted for attendees at the Quality Inn and Suites. The phone number is (308) 532-9090 or 1-800-760-3333. Room block will be held until September 9 and must specify "Nebraska Speech Communication & Theatre Association" for the block rooms -- $72 for "deluxe sleeping room accommodations in the main and north buildings" or $129 for "2-room suites with inside entrances." Both room options include a full hot breakfast buffet and are flat rates for 1-4 persons per room.

NSCTA Awards

The NSCTA annually recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to speech, debate, theatre, and communication studies in Nebraska. The awards are:
Gerald S. Oswald Outstanding Service Award
-
This award is given to persons who have demonstrated truly outstanding
dedication to the discipline of speech communication. The award is
reserved for those persons retiring, leaving the state, or changing
assignments. The award may be presented posthumously.
Dale E. Black Outstanding Young Teacher of Speech & Theatre Award
-
Two awards may be given: one from the elementary/secondary and one from
the college/university level. "Young" is defined as having a maximum of
seven years (including the present year) of teaching experience (not
including student teaching or teaching as a graduate student).
The
award is given for such traits as enthusiasm for work, scholarly
integrity, knowledge of subject matter, innovation, ability to motivate
and stimulate students, worthy goals in teaching, and professional
promise including such areas as involvement in professional
associations, research, and writing. Primary emphasis will be given to
the individual's classroom performance. Other areas (e.g.
extracurricular activities) will be given secondary consideration.
Outstanding Administrator Award
-
This award is granted to school administrators that have shown a great
support of and dedication to the Fine Arts, including speech, debate,
and theatre in our schools. It may be given to individuals in
administrative positions at the elementary, secondary or college or
university levels.
John Thurber Distinguished Teacher Award
-
This award is given to persons who have been teaching for longer than
seven years at the elementary, secondary, or university level. The
honor is designed to recognize individuals who have displayed
exceptional teaching ability, innovation in teaching methods, and
contributions to the growth and professionalism of organizations in
speech communications and/or publications.
If you would like to nominate an individual for any of these awards, please do so as soon as possible. Nominations need to be submitted by July 15 as winners will be selected this summer. Click on the Awards Nomination link and fill out the required information.
